Key Information
The 7-Day Rule
For the first 7 calendar days of any illness, you do not need a note from a doctor. You can self-certify by informing your employer directly or filling out an SC2 form.
Requesting a Note
You only need a formal Fit Note from a healthcare professional if you have been ill for more than 7 days.
Who Can Issue Them
Fit Notes are not just issued by GPs. Depending on your condition, it may be more appropriate for a nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist or occupational therapist to issue your note.
Return to Work
You do not need a “signed off” note to return to work. Once your Fit Note expires, it is automatically assumed that you are fit to return.
